Information Beautifully situated grave field by the ridge Enköpingsåsen. It dates from the earlier Iron Age and has almost a hundred burial-mounds and stone circles. In Årsunda church nearby there is a rune stone with motifs from the story Sigurdsagan from that time.

Information Already in the century 400 BC – that’s 2,600 years ago – iron was made from the ferruginous red soil here. Today the process is repeated on “red soil day”, held on the first Sunday of August each year. A family day is held in June. Pretty walking paths.

Information Five mining villages are spread around the area where the iron works was once located, in the middle of the village of Olsbenning. A few kilometers away another iron works, in operation during the 12th century, is today a sight of historic importance. The village served as a model for Nya Lapphyttan.

Information Using pre-historic methods, iron is still made here. In a 2000 year old iron production site, a group of enthusiasts have reconstruced blast furnaces, water wheels and a smithy. Check activities before visiting.

Information Today it is peaceful and idyllic by lake Bysjön, but the grave field reveals that there used to be hustle and bustle here. Over 1200 years ago, this was a central place for gatherings and home to the local ruler.

Information Imagine a log boat on its way over the lake. Around 1700 years ago, the people in it started to produce iron by the shore in little blast furnaces, which are still found here today.
